Adolescent Psychotherapy:
Helping Teens Thrive (15 years old to adulthood)

Adolescence is a critical time for emotional development, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is highly effective for helping teens overcome challenges such as anxiety, depression, and behavioral issues. There are so many different phases of adolescence that I have chosen late adolescence as an area to specialize, working with teens from around fifteen years of age through to adulthood.

Whether it’s anger management, school avoidance, or peer pressures, I focus on motivating teens to take ownership of their mental health, pointing them at a clear path for future happiness, and engaging them with the skills that will help them to follow this path.

A few of the disorders that are unique to children and teenagers include the following:

  • Conduct Disorder: A behavioral disorder characterized by a persistent pattern of violating social norms and the rights of others. Adolescents with conduct disorder may engage in aggressive behavior, deceitfulness, theft, or serious rule violations, often leading to conflicts with authority.
  • Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD): A pattern of angry, irritable mood, defiant behavior, and vindictiveness toward authority figures. Teenagers with ODD may frequently argue with parents and teachers, refuse to follow rules, and show resentment toward those in authority.
  • Separation Anxiety Disorder: Though more common in younger children, some adolescents may continue to experience intense anxiety when separated from home or loved ones. This can lead to significant distress, avoidance of school or social activities, and physical symptoms like headaches or stomach aches.

Disorders not unique to teenagers but that often come into focus in children and teenagers include the following:

Stuttering (Childhood-Onset Fluency Disorder): A communication disorder involving disruptions in speech fluency, such as repetitions, prolongations, or blocks. Adolescents with stuttering may feel self-conscious about their speech, which can impact social interactions and self-esteem.

Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD/ADD): A disorder marked by persistent inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Teenagers with ADHD often experience difficulties with focus, organization, and impulse control, which can affect academic performance and relationships.

Tourette’s Disorder: A neurological disorder characterized by repetitive, involuntary movements and vocalizations known as tics. Tics can range from mild to severe and may cause embarrassment or social challenges for teenagers, especially in social or school settings.
