Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

ACT, developed by Steven C. Hayes, stands on the foundation of relational frame theory (RFT)—a theory of human language and cognition. Grounded in behaviorism, ACT also draws insights from cognitive processes. Here’s what you need to know:

ACT encourages openness and acceptance of psychological events, even those traditionally considered negative or irrational within a standard cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) model. It shares common ground with Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) in emphasizing acceptance.

Unlike traditional CBT, which targets emotions through challenging irrational beliefs, ACT aims to help individuals respond constructively to situations. It simultaneously acknowledges and accepts challenging cognitive events and corresponding feelings.

ACT challenges the standard symptom reduction approach. It asserts that quality of life primarily depends on mindful, values-guided action. Regardless of the number of symptoms, individuals can find purpose by responding mindfully and congruently to their experiences.

Rather than replacing maladaptive thought processes, ACT teaches individuals to notice, accept, and embrace their private experiences. Psychological flexibility becomes key, drawing on personal values to guide meaningful action.

In summary, ACT invites individuals to live mindfully, guided by their values, and to respond constructively to life’s challenges.
